Facts About Maple Creek Energy

Jobs, Community, Reliability, and More

Maple Creek Energy is a proposed lower-carbon electric generating facility to be located in Fairbanks township of Sullivan County, Indiana. The project is a subsidiary of Advanced Power, a privately-owned global developer, manager, and owner of modern power infrastructure.

As an independent power producer, the company develops low-carbon and renewable electric generating projects in North America and Europe. Advanced Power presently has 8 gigawatts in development or operations in the United States and Europe. Formed in 2000, the company has U.S. offices in Boston, Massachusetts, and Houston, Texas.

Advanced Power is focused on advancing a sustainable energy future, bringing reliable energy to places that need it, and providing economic benefits and jobs to communities while making massive contributions to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

 ENERGY PRODUCTION

  • Generating Capacity: Maple Creek Energy will be a modern, highly efficient, natural gas electric-generation facility that will produce approximately 600 megawatts (MW) of electricity — enough to power more than 600,000 Indiana homes.
  • Energy for Indiana: Power generated by Maple Creek Energy will flow directly into the regional power system managed by MISO, serving energy needs within the State of Indiana.
  • State-of-the-Art Technology: Maple Creek Energy will use state-of-the-art combined cycle turbine technology. The combined-cycle design produces electricity efficiently – capturing heat to create additional electricity via a steam turbine.
  • Clean, Domestic Fuel Source: Natural gas is a clean, abundant, domestically available fuel source that promotes U.S. energy independence.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Small Footprint: Maple Creek Energy will produce efficient generation from a small footprint. The proposed 25-acre facility footprint is set back 1,250 feet from Route 63 on a 170-acre parcel with existing electrical infrastructure and nearby natural gas interconnection facilities.
  • Carbon Displacement: The technology at Maple Creek Energy will produce cleaner electricity, avoiding nearly 65% of the CO2 emissions of a coal-generating facility and 35% of a typical single-cycle natural gas generator.
  • Air Quality: The facility meets National Ambient Air Quality Standards as established in the Clean Air Act. These standards protect public health and the environment.
  • Water Usage: Maple Creek Energy will not discharge any water offsite. All facility process water will be recycled and reused within the facility. This recycling and the use of efficient air-cooling technology dramatically reduces the water requirements of the facility.
  • Sound Mitigation: The facility will include sound mitigation strategies such as enclosing the generating equipment – a best-practice strategy to reduce potential sound from the facility.
  • Traffic Management: Maple Creek Energy will enter into an agreement with the county to protect or improve local road infrastructure and support local labor needs during construction. Vehicles are expected to be routed to two separate access points on site, and shift changes will be managed to ensure efficient and safe entry and exit to and from the facility site.

 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

  • Construction Jobs: Maple Creek Energy will provide up to 550 construction jobs, with a priority to source from local and regional labor over the two- to three-year construction period of the facility.
  • Post-construction Jobs: Once in operation, Maple Creek Energy will create approximately 20 full-time jobs, including engineering, management, and operations personnel.
  • Indirect Jobs: Maple Creek Energy will create additional employment opportunities, including contracted services such as security, catering, landscaping, property maintenance, etc.

 ECONOMIC BENEFITS

  • Investment: Maple Creek Energy will be a $700 million capital investment in Sullivan County.
  • Tax Abatement: Maple Creek Energy will provide economic development payments directly to Sullivan County to ensure that the tax value created by the facility directly benefits the local economy.
  • Local Infrastructure Support: Maple Creek Energy is expected to benefit the local municipal water supply infrastructure through the purchase of water services.
  • Local Purchasing: The facility will benefit the Sullivan County economy through the direct purchase of local goods and services, creating a positive impact from direct, indirect, and induced economic stimuli. For example, during construction and operations, employees will be staying in Sullivan County, frequenting local restaurants and other establishments, and providing additional economic benefits to the community.
