Maple Creek Energy ("Maple Creek") is the first phase of a proposed lower-carbon electric generating facility to be located in Fairbanks township of Sullivan County, Indiana.
Generating Capacity: Maple Creek will be a modern, highly efficient, natural gas electric-generation facility that will produce approximately 600 megawatts of electricity — enough to power more than 600,000 Indiana homes.
Energy for Indiana: Power generated by Maple Creek will flow directly into the regional power system, managed by MISO, to serve energy needs within the State of Indiana.
State-of-the-Art Technology: Maple Creek will use state-of-the-art combined cycle turbine technology. The combined-cycle design produces electricity efficiently – capturing waste heat to create additional electricity via a steam turbine.
Clean, Domestic Fuel Source: Natural gas is a clean, abundant, domestically available fuel source that promotes U.S. energy independence and burns cleaner than other fossil fuels.
Small Footprint: Phase 1 of Maple Creek will produce efficient generation from a small footprint. The 25-acre facility footprint is set back 1,250 feet from Route 63 on a 170-acre parcel and is near existing electrical and gas infrastructure.
Carbon Displacement: Maple Creek produces nearly 65% less CO2 than a typical coal generating facility and 35% less CO2 than a typical single-cycle natural gas generator.
Air Quality: The facility meets National Ambient Air Quality Standards as established in the Clean Air Act. These standards protect public health and the environment.
Water Usage: Maple Creek will not discharge any water offsite. All facility process water will be recycled and re-used within the facility. This recycling and the use of efficient air cooling technology dramatically reduces the water requirements of the facility.
Sound Mitigation: The facility will include acoustic mitigation strategies such as enclosing the generating equipment -- a best-practice strategy to reduce potential sound from the facility.
Traffic Management: Maple Creek will enter into an agreement with the county to protect or improve local road infrastructure and support local labor needs during construction. Vehicles are expected to access the site off State Route 63, and shift changes will be managed to ensure efficient and safe entry and exit to and from the facility site.
Construction Jobs: Maple Creek will provide up to 550 construction jobs with a priority to source local and regional labor over the two- to three-year construction period of the facility. These are workers who will be staying in Sullivan County and frequenting local restaurants and other establishments, additional economic benefit to the community.
Post-construction Jobs: Once in operation, the facility will create about 20 full-time jobs, including engineering, management, and operations personnel.
Indirect Jobs: Maple Creek will create additional employment opportunities during the operations period, including contracted services such as security, catering, landscaping, and property maintenance, etc.
Investment: Maple Creek will be a $700 million capital investment in Sullivan County.
Economic Development Payment: Maple Creek has negotiated a tax abatement agreement and associated economic development payment to Sullivan County to ensure that the tax value created by the facility directly benefits the local economy.
Local Infrastructure Support: Maple Creek will strengthen local infrastructure through the purchase of water services. Water rates include funding to support water treatment and distribution facilities and operations.
Local Purchasing: The facility benefits the Sullivan County economy by direct purchase of local goods and services, creating a positive impact from direct, indirect, and induced economic stimuli.
